Rule 19 of Swanson's Unwritten Rules of Management
When interacting with people outside the company, remember that you are always representing the company. Be especially careful of your commitments.
Evan if it’s over lunch or after hours, you are still speaking for the company. No matter how much you may believe that you are just speaking for yourself, you may well be perceived by customers, suppliers and others to represent the company’s point of view.
When you say you’re going to do something, you are committing the company to specific actions. Make sure you have fully thought through these commitments and are prepared to honor them. Do not ever make commitments that are beyond our scope of responsibility.
